Abstract

In an infant who died when less than one hour old, with clear morphological signs of cytomegalovirus infection in the liver, kidneys, lungs and pancreas, cell degeneration and necrosis were observed in the islets of Langerhans, with CMV cells and insulitis. Electronmicroscopically all three types of islet cells showed signs of involvement, but this was most distinct in the α1 cells. No symptoms of diabetes had been observed.
